A LETTER TO MYSELF

a poem by Aryan Dalal, MYP 4

             My strength,

             Defined by my muscle mass,
             My purpose,
Defined by the power exerted on me by my father.

             To my sisters,
             I am the exception,

             To my mother,
I am the son who will repent his gender.
             To a stranger,

I am the darkness that will seep into her irises if she gets too
             close.

Beneath the oak tree with lingering traces of termite,
I rest and nurture my insecurities,

Listening to rupturing and tired wails of my vocal cords,
             They ache as I breathe,
             With my voice,
             I beg forgiveness.

Manhood is the cinder that accumulated in my hand,

When I burned myself with the burden of life.

                                                                                                               93
