litically, economically and/or socially. The need for EU and UN was the devastating after effect of
world war 2, as the world was broken and divided due to excessive bloodshed, the EU was formed
to avoid any further bloodshed between the Eurozone and the UN as the predecessor of League
of Nations for peacemaking and peacebuilding. Every supranational organizations have different
needs but the most common ones are to create unity, military support and economic support.
Advantages of these organizations differ, for the UN it would be being the largest supranational
organization with a total of 193 member states, thus giving so many countries aid and help of the
UN, it would also be having established goals like the SDG’s which make it easier to accomplish
these goals and understand the progress of the organization. For the EU it would be the Schengen
visa, which allows citizens of member states to travel to other member states without any travel
requirements like a passport and visa. This also removes tariffs from exports and imports. Thus
every Supranational organization has its own advantages and an overview of all of them would in-
clude unity, economic support, military support and gives it a platform to resolve issues peacefully,
without violence and more constructively.
Collective influence in global affairs would mean the support and the decision making of member
states for a proposed solution, which may not always be directly related to their country. However
this power to create a collective influence isn’t always offered to all member states. Take for exam-
ple the influence in decision making of the USA in the Ukrainian crisis, USA is a member state
of the UN and has made several judgements and jurisdictions in the Ukraine- Russia Crisis. All
member states would vote for the resolution being passed and thus have a collective influence in
this crisis. It might not directly correlate with them but can affect them and impact them, this will
be further explained.
Some believe that member states don’t have greater collective influence in global affairs because
they believe democratic procedures are followed and because a vote is conducted one member
state does not have more influence, this is true in some organizations like the EU, infact the EU
doesn’t offer more power to any member state.
Some believe that collective influence is often given to member states like the permanent five in
the UN and this is highly beneficial, whereas some happen to disagree. In my opinion collective in-
fluence is offered to many member states which leads to unfairness in the supranational organiza-
tion, like Russia has a veto power in the UNSC, this leads to no development for Ukraine because
Ukraine requires the UN’s aid and help and cannot be offered any help because Russia vetoed the
draft resolution for the aid of Ukraine. By offering more power to 5 member states they have a
choice and an effect on what happens in global affairs, they influence and impact them.
To conclude I would like to say that some member states in fact have a greater collective influence
in global affairs and an example of the same would be the permanent five in the UN.
