DIFFERENT COLOURS OF LOVE
When straight people think of queer love,
They think of two skinny white boys holding hands;
Of women in leather jackets and combat boots;
And unfunny helicopter apache jokes.
When straight people think of queer love,
They think of stereotypes,
Of #pride celebrations with unicorns and rainbows;
Of the inherent queerness of boys in pink stripes;
And how the brooding feminist in literature class must be lesbian, right?
But they don’t think of queer love with its innocent promises
And fearful whispers at 3:00 am because who knew holding the hand of someone you love
Could make you the devil!
When I think of queer love,
I think of Sapphic daughters made from poetry,
Creating their constellations in the midnight sky,
Because the words Sappho commanded are indeed immortal;
Of Achilles and Patroclus, their ashes buried next to each other,
Inseparable even in death.
When I think of queer love,
I also think of Brianna who doesn’t have to pretend to be a boy anymore;
Of young queer kids finding acceptance;
I think of hope, and stardust, and togetherness,
Because love is meant to unite us, not divide us,
And loving in different colours should be celebrated, not hated.
